This tool is located on the RIMS section of the Road Tab.
Function
The Interchange interface () consists of four internal tabs. These tabs-- Search, Intersections, Crossings, and Bridges-- are used to search for interchanges and define the list of intersections, crossings, and bridges associated with a specific interchange.
Static Sections
At the top of the Interchanges interface are two static sections: Filters and Dominant Route Fields. The image below shows the sections, followed by further descriptions below.
Filters
In order to use the remainder of the interface, the user must search for a route using the Filters section. This section has four required filters: County, Route Type, Route Number, and Auxiliary. There are also three optional filters on this interface: From MP, To MP, and Direction. Once all required filters and desired optional filters are selected, the user can click "Find" to populate the interface with applicable data. Alternatively, the user can click the "Reset" button to clear the selections, or they can click the "Add New Interchange" button to create an interchange. New interchanges can only be created if crossings exist that are not already associated to an interchange.
To add a new interchange, select the button in the filters section. The system will then display a list of all routes that the query route crosses, as defined by the intersection table records with the "Grade Sep" checkbox selected. The user must select a crossing from this list, then click the "Use Crossing" button to define the main routes comprising the new interchange. Once defined, this selected crossing will be associated to the interchange and may not be removed. The route location in the selected crossing will be used to determine the list of available Intersections, Crossings, and Bridges which may be associated to the interchange.
Dominant Route Fields
The Dominant Route Fields are view-only, and they will be populated if the user selects a subordinate route row in the Interchange Quick View table. When a subordinate route is selected, its dominant route will be described using the given field categories-- Dominant Route Type, Route, Auxiliary, Direction, and MP.
Search Tab
The user is required to search for a single route in the Search Tab. There are two primary areas in this tab: Interchange Quick View and Interchange Summary.
Interchange Quick View
The Interchange Quick View section of the Search tab will list all interchanges which contain the queried route. The system will look at Intersections, Crossings, and Bridges to determine the list of interchanges the queried route is contained within. A selection from the Quick View section will fill the Interchange Summary section with data.
Interchange Summary
The Interchange Summary section lists the Intersections, Crossings, and Bridges contained within the interchange in separate tables.
Controls
There are some important controls on this internal tab.
Control | Used To... |
Delete Selected Interchange Link | Delete the selected interchange displayed in the Interchange Quick View table. |
Show Route Segments List | Display a pop‐up list of the route segments associated with the interchange. |
Save Changes Button | Save any changes made to the interface. |
Discard Changes Button | Discard any changes made to the interface. |
Intersections Tab
An interchange is required to have one or more non‐grade separated intersections associated to it. To check if this requirement is satisfied, the user can navigate to the second tab on the Interchange interface: Intersections. This tab consists of a Selected Intersections and Available Intersections table. Intersections can be moved from the Available to the Selected table or removed from the Selected table back to Available.
To add an intersection into the interchange, select an intersection in the Available Intersections table by clicking its checkbox. Then, click the "Add Selected" button to move this intersection into the "Selected Intersections" table and into the interchange.
To remove an intersection from the interchange, select an intersection in the Selected Intersections table by clicking its checkbox. Then, click the "Remove Selected" button to move this intersection back to the "Available Intersections" table and remove it from the interchange.
Crossings Tab
The Crossings tab allows the user to associate one or more crossings with an interchange. The first crossing in the "Selected Crossing" list will be the crossing which defines the main routes in the interchange; this crossing cannot be removed.
To add a crossing to the interchange, select a crossing in the "Available Crossings" table by clicking its checkbox. Then, click the "Add Selected" button to move this crossing into the "Selected Crossings" table and into the interchange.
To remove a crossing from the interchange, select a crossing in the "Selected Crossings" table by clicking its checkbox. Then, click the "Remove Selected" button to move this crossing back to the "Available Crossings" table and remove it from the interchange.
Bridges Tab
An interchange is required to have one or more bridges associated to it. To check if this requirement is satisfied, the user can navigate to the fourth tab on the Interchange interface: Bridges. This tab consists of a Selected Bridges and Available Bridges table. Bridges can be moved from the Available to the Selected table or removed from the Selected table back to Available.
To add a bridge into the interchange, select a bridge in the Available Bridges table by clicking its checkbox. Then, click the "Add Selected" button to move this intersection into the "Selected Bridges" table and into the interchange.
To remove a bridge from the interchange, select a bridge in the Selected Bridges table by clicking its checkbox. Then, click the "Remove Selected" button to move this intersection back to the "Available Bridges" table and remove it from the interchange.
